EDUCATION

Provide strong, successful
programs from pre-school
to Piedmont Community College

As a graduate of Roxboro High School and East Carolina University, I feel that it is essential to improve the quality of education in our county. My family has a long history of being involved in education.  My great-grandfather, Willie Wilkerson, donated the land for the first Bushy Fork School and was chairman of the Person County School Board from 1919 until his death in 1943.

My sister, Mary Anne, and I both became educators.  I have taught in the classroom, been an assistant principal, high school principal and worked at the central office level.   With my educational experience, I feel I am someone with a unique understanding of school board budget issues which will serve me well in dealing with county budgets.  I am also a candidate with a successful record for accomplishing community and business goals which will help me deal with government issues.

Sam Kennington working for cooperative relationships between all public education schools in Person County.

As your next County Commissioner, I will propose the following education initiatives:

  • Set quarterly meetings between County Commissioner’s, School Board and Community College board members to discuss county educational needs.

  • Set quarterly meetings between County Commissioner’s and the Teacher-of-the-Year from each public school and PCC to discuss county educational needs from the classroom teacher’s perspective.

  • Propose initiatives and timetables to bring the schools local funding in line with the state average.

  • Provide strong, successful programs for all students from pre-school to Piedmont Community College.

  • Set aside a certain amount of funds to go directly towards improving the technology in our schools.

  • Work with the board members on the following school concerns:

    • decrease high school drop out rate
    • increase test scores to national averages
    • recruitment and retainment of highly qualified teachers
    • state-of-art school facilities

As your county commissioner, I will work hard to ensure that our schools are a top priority of county government. We need the satisfaction of knowing that this county has done its best to prepare our students for today’s challenges to succeed in life.
